In this article, you will find out why your student's activity log file might appear damaged when exported, and how to resolve the issue.

What you will need:

  • A SystemeScale account
  • A course
  • An enrolled student

Understanding the issue

In case you export the activity log of a student and find the file damaged, you must first make sure that you have not used special characters, such as emojis, in the title of the course, a chapter, or a module.

⚠️
Excel Format Limitation
The standard .xls export format does not fully support certain special characters or emojis. When these symbols are present in your titles, Excel does not know how to display them and will trigger an error message when attempting to read the file.

How to fix the damaged file

As a result of this limitation, it is not recommended to use special characters in the title of a course, lecture, or module. To resolve the issue, simply follow these steps:

1
Review your titles
Navigate to your course editor and check the titles of your course, modules, and individual lectures for any unsupported characters.
2
Remove special characters
Edit the titles to remove any emojis or complex special characters, then save your changes.
3
Re-export the log
Once the titles are updated using standard characters, return to the student's profile and export the activity log again. The new file should open perfectly in Excel without any errors.
