How to trigger automations after contacts click links in an email
In this article, you will learn how to automate strategic background actions whenever contacts click embedded text links or buttons inside your outward-facing emails. This enables seamless, real-time customer behavioral segmentation and automated pipeline personalization.
What you will need:
- A SystemeScale account
- An outbound newsletter broadcast or campaign sequence milestone draft containing at least one active hyperlink address
Method 1: Using Linear Automation Rules (Link-Specific Precision)
Linear automation rules are ideal when you need a specific hyperlink to trigger a single action, such as applying a tag or registering a customer for an offer.
1
Initialize a new automation rule layout
Navigate into your master administrative dashboard, hover over the Automations tab header, select Rules, and click the primary Create button.
2
Map the link click condition parameter
Inside the Triggers selection layout column, click the (+) icon and select the trigger labeled
Email link clicked. This instructs the engine to monitor outbound email interactions.3
Isolate your target parent email and link
Use the dynamic dropdown inputs to refine your logic target:
- First, select the parent newsletter or campaign step email asset that contains the tracking links.
- Second, select the exact hyperlink URL token that should trigger this rule block execution.
4
Attach structural system actions and save
Under the Actions layout column block, click the (+) icon to choose your intended fulfillment path (e.g.,
Add a tag or Subscribe to campaign). Click the primary Save rule button block to push your automation live instantly.Method 2: Using Multi-Step Visual Workflows (Branching Logic Paths)
Visual workflows are best when a link click serves as a gateway to multi-path journeys, split delays, or conditional logic trees.
5
Open your visual workflow builder engine
Navigate into your menu bar dashboard, select Automations, click on Workflows, and choose to add a fresh workflow node grid canvas (How to create workflows in SystemeScale).
6
Set the canvas trigger anchor node
Create your workflow entry node by selecting the
Email link clicked condition model token, and mapping it to your target parent campaign or newsletter asset card.7
Insert a branching Decision component
Click the (+) icon directly beneath your trigger step block to add a new canvas element. Choose the Decision control module type, then select Email clicked inside your condition property filter list to divide your target audience along Yes/No execution paths.

Workflow URL Isolation Constraint Rule
Note this architectural layout restriction: inside simple Automation Rules, you can isolate the specific hyperlink address tracking string to assign different tasks to different links in the same message payload. However, within multi-step Visual Workflows, the canvas logic operates at the message layer. The system monitors whether any tracked link inside the chosen email container was opened, and cannot isolate distinct URLs within a single message node block.
π
Strategic Segmentation Application
Deploying behavioral interaction tracking allows you to silently tag contacts based on expressed interest profiles, instantly enroll unengaged segments into down-sell pitches, or automatically halt promotional messaging pathways for users who already clicked through to check out your storefronts.
