How to compress a video with HandBrake
In this article, you will learn how to reduce the size of your videos so they take up less space and can be easily accessed in a browser.
You will need:
- HandBrake software installed on your computer
- A video to compress

Why compress videos?
Compressed videos usually load faster, take up less storage space, and are easier for visitors to access in a browser.
Step 1: Open your video in HandBrake
Start by opening the source video you want to compress.

Open HandBrake
Launch HandBrake on your computer.

Open a single video file
Click File: Open a single video file to choose your source video. You can also drag and drop the video into HandBrake.

Step 2: Choose where to save the compressed file
Before starting the compression, choose the destination for the new video file.

Choose the save location
Click Browse and select where you want to save the compressed video file.

Give the compressed file a clear name so you can easily identify it after the encoding process finishes.
Step 3: Enable Web optimized
For browser-friendly playback, enable the web optimization setting before compressing the video.

Check the Web optimized box to optimize your video for the web.

Step 4: Start compressing the video
After choosing the video, destination, and web optimization setting, start the compression process.

Start encoding
Click Start Encode to start compressing your video.
Step 5: Keep the same video dimensions
If you want to keep the same dimensions of the video, adjust the Dimensions settings.

Open Dimensions
Go to the Dimensions tab.

Set Anamorphic to None
Select None for Anamorphic if you want to keep the same dimensions of the video.
Step 6: Find the compressed video
Once the compression is complete, you will find the compressed video in the destination you selected.

Open the destination folder
Go to the folder you selected in HandBrake and locate the compressed video file.

Test the compressed video
Play the compressed video before uploading or embedding it to confirm the quality and browser compatibility are acceptable.
Embed the compressed video on your page
